Guilin Hui Cultural Center
This is a mosque and market complex for the city of Guilin, located in southern China. The landowners are the local Muslim Hui community. They plan to replace their older mosque with the help of a Han Chinese developer. The developer will finance the project with revenue from the hotel above, while the Hui community manages the new mosque and market below.
The concept; a geometric jade mountain, comes from the political need to fit into the Han majority city, while
also expressing muslim identity in one image. A hexagonal grid was laid out over the entire site, from there a modular unit was generated with which the form of the project is generated. The major axis of the market and mosque faces directly toward Mecca. Due to the political climate at the time this project was not built. Designed in 2012.
